Like most geotechnical engineers early in their career, Dane splits his time between the field and office. He most often works on ground improvement analyses. Among other responsibilities, this might mean drilling for samples, performing infiltration tests or measuring compaction.
“The best part of being a geotechnical engineer is that you get plenty of time to be outside and not behind a desk,” Dane says.
Dane completed his masters in geotechnical engineering at Utah State University, where he learned the complexities of levees and erosion modeling while completing his thesis project under the direction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
“I loved the work and research I did,” Dane says. “I spent a lot of time writing up my thesis report and creating 3D models of our laboratory models of backward erosion piping.”
Graduating with his masters in geotechnical engineering during a global pandemic in 2020 wasn’t ideal timing, but Dane hit it off with staff in GeoEngineers’ Boise office and immediately got to work. His background in erosion mitigation and earthen dams has been valuable, and he expects to transition to more geo structural (deep foundations) and earth structure design work over time.
When he’s not bouncing between the office and the field, Dane likes to play the piano at home to relax and recharge. He loves to get outside for hiking, boating, camping and winter sports, and if you need a ringer for your volleyball team, Dane is always ready to play.
