As a staff geotechnical engineer, Garrett is on the frontline of many of our most exciting Puget Sound projects. He is often in the field coordinating with clients and contractors, collecting samples, observing construction, and doing whatever is necessary to keep our projects on track.
Garrett’s exposure to professional geology came much earlier than most. Both of his parents spent time as exploration geologists, and Garrett’s father had a long career as a hydrogeologist. Thanks to his parents, Garrett knew he wanted to pursue geology from an early age, and he eventually followed them into the “family business” with an undergraduate degree in geology. After graduation and geologic field camp were complete, Garrett found a job as a geotechnical field technician and discovered a new passion for engineering.
“I quickly saw how cool geotechnical engineering was from the boots-on-the-ground perspective,” Garrett says. “Six months as a technician was enough to inspire me to want to pursue the engineering discipline further, leading me to a graduate degree in geotechnical engineering and now a developing career.”
Before joining GeoEngineers, Garrett worked at several engineering consulting firms in the Pacific Northwest, where he held positions as a geotechnical field technician, field engineer, and staff professional. At each stop, Garrett learned more about geotechnical engineering and geology. He worked to provide geotechnical construction observation and testing services for shallow and deep foundations and excavations, and design and investigation support for dredging and capping, transportation, marine infrastructure, and environmental restoration projects. He also developed a specialized skill set related to geologic hazard assessments for developers and forest harvest areas.
With his background in geologic sciences and geotechnical engineering, as well as his extensive experience at different consulting firms working on projects country-wide, Garrett brings a broad understanding of soil behavior and construction processes to his role.
In his free time, Garrett is also an avid traveler. He enjoys exploring new cultures and cuisines and has been to 30 countries—and counting. Closer to home, Garrett makes good use of the Cascade Range in his backyard.
“I’m the cliché Pacific Northwest native in that I am hopelessly addicted to mountain biking and snowboarding throughout the local mountains,” Garrett says.
