It seems like every day we see new and more worrying headlines about our planet. The ocean is rising, species are dying, and it never seems like we’re doing enough to stop it. The conversation about climate change is almost always bleak, but maybe that’s part of the problem. It can be hard to take action, or even pay attention, when it seems like there is no hope.
So this Earth Day, let’s take a moment to look at how far we’ve come. The world is still warming and climate change is still an extremely serious threat—but there is hope. Despite the headlines, over the past 10-15 years we have made incredible progress toward our climate goals. Industries are shifting to renewable energy, fossil fuels are dying, and technology promises new and exciting solutions to some of our biggest climate challenges.
The video below is from one of my favorite educational STEM channels on YouTube, Kurzgesagt. It recaps our climate challenges and shows how far we’ve actually come in recent decades. I hope you find it as encouraging and inspiring as I did. Change is possible and it’s already happening. If we each play our part, our hopes can become reality. That really is good news.
