Evaluating and Mitigating Pipeline Strain Caused by Long-Term Movement of the Cascadia Landslide Complex in Washington

Join us for a discussion on managing the pipeline risk posed by a large landslide complex along the Columbia River Gorge in Washington. GeoEngineers recently worked with Williams Pipeline to compile and process a large set of monitoring data from a variety of sources including ground-based survey, satellite-based InSAR, aerial LiDAR, strain gauge data, and in-line inspection (ILI) using an IMU. Using this diverse data set, the team was able to remove instrument noise and uncertainty to identify and quantify areas along the pipeline subjected to axial and bending strain. After concluding that the nearly 70-year-old pipeline had been subjected to strain greater than the established acceptable strain capacity, the pipeline was replaced in 2024. During this webinar, GeoEngineers and Williams will discuss some of the key strategies for designing and constructing the new pipeline to increase long-term resiliency. In addition, they will discuss some continuous fiber optic technologies that were installed to monitor long-term strain in the new pipeline.
